Overview

Despite its name, Kali Jeeri is not related to regular cumin (Jeera). It is the seed of the Purple Fleabane plant. These small, black seeds are characterized by their extreme bitterness, which in Ayurveda is a signal of potent cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties. It is often used in combination with Ajwain and Methi (Fenugreek) as a powerful metabolic and digestive tonic.

French: Cumin noir amer
German: Bitterer Kreuzkümmel
Chinese: Xiǎo shān gānjú (小山柑菊)
Arabic: ون ر (Kamun murr)
Spanish: Comino amargo
Russian: Горький тмин (Gor’kiy tmin)
Japanese: ニガクミン (Nigakumin)

Kali Jeeri, or “Bitter Cumin,” is a powerful detoxifying herb in Ayurveda. It is renowned for its Krimighna (anti-parasitic) properties, used to eliminate intestinal worms and parasites. Its intense bitterness helps to destroy toxins (ama), stimulate the liver and pancreas, and purify the blood. It is particularly effective in pacifying the Kapha and Vata doshas and is often used to support healthy blood sugar levels and manage skin conditions.

For a Detoxifying Tonic: A traditional mixture involves lightly roasting Kali Jeeri, Methi (Fenugreek), and Ajwain seeds, powdering them, and taking a small amount (half a teaspoon) of the mixture with warm water before bed.
Note: Due to its potency, Kali Jeeri should be used in small quantities and preferably under the guidance of a practitioner.
