OUR CERTIFICATIONS

Overview

Brassica nigra produces small, intensely pungent black seeds. They are a staple in South Indian tempering (tadka) and are the traditional seed used for making authentic Dijon mustard. Their intense heat is released when the seeds are broken and mixed with a cool liquid.

French: Moutarde noire
German: Schwarzer Senf
Chinese: Hēi jiè (黑芥)
Arabic: ردل أ ودسخ (Khardal aswad)
Spanish: Mostaza negra
Russian: Чёрная горчица (Chornaya gorchitsa)
Japanese: ブラックマスタード (Burakku masutādo)

Black Mustard seeds are the most pungent of the mustard varieties and are highly valued in Ayurveda for their heating and stimulating properties. They are excellent for pacifying Kapha
and Vata doshas. They are used to stimulate circulation, clear congestion from the respiratory tract, and ignite a sluggish digestive fire.

For Tempering (Tadka): Add a teaspoon of whole black mustard seeds to hot oil. Once they begin to pop and sputter, they release a nutty flavor, a crucial first step for many Indian recipes.
For a Decongesting Plaster: Mix the powder with warm water to create a paste. Spread it on a cloth and apply to a congested chest for a warming, circulation-boosting effect. Use with caution as it can irritate the skin.
