Overview

A flowering plant from the carrot family, Fennel is native to the Mediterranean shores but is now an integral part of Indian cuisine and wellness. The small, oblong, greenish seeds are highly aromatic and are used both as a culinary spice and a post-meal digestive aid. Coated with sugar, they become the familiar “mukhwas” offered in Indian restaurants.

Fennel, or Mishreya, is one of Ayurveda’s favorite herbs for digestion. It has a unique quality of being both cooling (Sheeta Virya) yet stimulating to the digestive fire (Agni), making it excellent for pacifying Pitta without suppressing digestion. It is a tridoshic herb, traditionally chewed after meals to freshen breath, prevent gas, and soothe acid reflux. It is also beneficial for eyesight and promoting lactation.

For a Post-Meal Digestive Tea: Steep 1 tsp of fennel powder or whole seeds in a cup of hot water. It’s a perfect, gentle way to prevent bloating after a heavy meal.
As a Breath Freshener: Chew on a small spoonful of whole seeds after a meal for a refreshing effect.
