OUR CERTIFICATIONS

Overview

Brassica juncea, or Indian Mustard, produces small, dark seeds that are more pungent than their yellow counterparts. They are a cornerstone of Indian tempering (tadka), where they are fried in hot oil until they pop, releasing their nutty, pungent flavor into the dish.

French: Moutarde brune
German: Brauner Senf
Chinese: Jièzǐ (芥子)
Arabic: ينخبردل (Khardal bunni)
Spanish: Mostaza parda
Russian: Горчица сарептская (Gorchitsa sareptskaya)
Japanese: ブラウンマスタード (Buraun masutādo)

Brown Mustard seeds are a vital spice in Indian cuisine. In Ayurveda, their intense heating nature makes them excellent for pacifying Vata and Kapha doshas. They are used to stimulate digestion, increase appetite, and clear congestion. Topically, a mustard plaster is a traditional remedy to improve circulation and relieve muscle pain and chest congestion.

For Tempering (Tadka): Add a teaspoon of whole mustard seeds to hot oil. Once they begin to pop and sputter, add other spices and pour over your dish. This is the first step for many Indian recipes.
For a Pain-Relieving Plaster: Mix the powder with warm water to create a paste. Spread it on a cloth and apply to sore muscles or a congested chest for a warming effect. Use with caution as it can irritate the skin.
