Overview

Indigo is a leafy shrub whose leaves contain a compound called indican. When the leaves are fermented and oxidized, this precursor transforms into the deep blue pigment, indigotin. For millennia, this magical transformation has been used to create a permanent blue dye. When applied to hair that has been pre-treated with Henna, the Indigo pigment binds to the red-orange Lawsone molecules, resulting in a beautiful, natural black color.

General Usage

Indigo is nature’s original blue jean dye and Ayurveda’s premier herb for achieving natural black hair. It is always used in conjunction with Henna to produce shades from rich brown to deep, lustrous black. In Ayurveda, it is known to pacify the Kapha and Vata doshas. It is also a renowned Keshya (hair growth promoter) herb that conditions the hair, helps prevent scalp infections, and can reduce premature graying.
