Overview

Haritaki is the dried fruit of a large deciduous tree that grows across India. It is so revered for its cleansing and restorative properties that it is often the first ingredient listed in many classical Ayurvedic formulas. It scrapes toxins from the intestines, nourishes the body’s tissues, and supports the healthy function of the eyes, nervous system, and colon.

French: Myrobalan chébulique
German: Chebulische Myrobalane, Haritaki
Chinese: Hē zǐ (诃子)
Arabic: (Halilaj kabuli)
Spanish: Haritaki
Russian: Харитаки (Kharitaki)
Japanese: ハリタキ (Haritaki)

Haritaki is called the “King of Herbs” in Ayurveda and is depicted in the hands of the Medicine Buddha. It is one of the three fruits of Triphala and is unique in that it is said to contain five of the six tastes (lacking only salty). It is a tridoshic marvel, but especially good at balancing Vata dosha. It is a powerful Anulomana (a mild laxative that corrects the flow of Vata) and is revered for its rejuvenating and detoxifying effects on the entire digestive system and colon.

For a Gentle Daily Detox: Mix half a teaspoon of Haritaki powder in a cup of warm water and drink before bedtime to support healthy bowel function and colon cleansing.
For a Soothing Gargle: A decoction made with the powder can be used as a gargle to soothe throat irritations and support gum health.
