Overview

Originally a staple food for the ancient Aztecs and Mayans, Chia has gained global fame for its exceptional nutritional profile. These tiny seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in liquid, creating a thick, nutrient-dense gel. This unique property makes them a versatile ingredient in everything from puddings and smoothies to egg-substitutes in vegan baking.

French: Graines de chia
German: Chiasamen
Chinese: Qíyà zǐ (奇亚籽)
Arabic: ذور ا (Budhur al-shia)
Spanish: Semillas de chía
Russian: Семена чиа (Semena chia)
Japanese: チアシード (Chia shīdo)

While newer to Ayurveda, Chia seeds are embraced for their Balya (strengthening) and Brimhana (nourishing) properties. Their ability to form a gel makes them incredibly hydrating and soothing for the digestive system, helping to ease constipation. They balance Vata due to their oily and heavy nature. Packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein, they are a modern superfood used to support energy levels, heart health, and blood sugar balance.

For a Hydrating Chia Pudding: Mix 2 tbsp of whole seeds with half a cup of milk (dairy or plant-based) and a touch of sweetener. Let it set in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight.
For an Energy-Boosting Drink: Stir 1 tbsp of seeds or powder into a glass of water with a squeeze of lemon. Let it sit for 10 minutes before drinking.
