Overview

Country Mallow is a perennial shrub that grows wild in the tropical and subtropical plains of India. The true power of the plant is concentrated in its strong, ropy roots, which are rich in alkaloids like ephedrine. It is a foundational ingredient in many classical Ayurvedic massage oils (tailams) and formulations designed to build strength and support neurological health.

Bala, which translates to “strength,” is a premier tonic herb in Ayurveda. It is a celebrated Balya (strengthening) and Vata pacifying herb. It is traditionally used to build muscle mass, increase endurance, and nourish the nervous system. It is also a powerful rejuvenating tonic for overall health and vitality, often used in cases of weakness and fatigue.

For a Strengthening Tonic: A traditional method is to consume a milk decoction. Boil 1 tsp of Bala powder in one cup of milk and half a cup of water until the liquid reduces by half. Strain and drink.
For Rejuvenating Massage Oil: The powder is a key ingredient in traditional Ayurvedic oils like Dhanwantaram Thailam, used for nourishing the muscles and nerves.
