OUR CERTIFICATIONS

Overview

An Indigo Cake represents the final stage of traditional Indigo dye production. After the indican from the leaves is fermented and oxidized to produce the insoluble indigotin pigment, the pigment slurry is allowed to settle. The excess water is drained, and the thick pigment paste is pressed into blocks or “cakes” and dried. This creates a stable, concentrated, and easily transportable form of the precious blue dye.

French: Gâteau d’indigo
German: Indigo-Kuchen
Chinese: Lán diàn (蓝靛)
Arabic: ا (Ka’kat al-nila)
Spanish: Torta de índigo
Russian: Брикет индиго (Briket indigo)
Japanese: 固形インディゴ (Kokei indego)

The Indigo Cake is a traditional, concentrated form of the Indigo dye pigment. It is primarily used by textile artisans and dyers for creating natural blue fabrics. In a personal care context, the cake can be broken down and ground into a powder for hair coloring, offering the same benefits as the pre-powdered form. It is a testament to the traditional, artisanal method of dye extraction and preservation.

For Hair Color: The cake must first be ground into a very fine powder using a mortar and pestle. Once powdered, it can be used in the exact same way as our standard Indigo powder for hair coloring.
For Textile Dyeing: The cake is broken and used to create a traditional dye vat for coloring natural fibers like cotton, silk, and wool.

Sourcing

Our Indigo Cakes are created from the same high-quality Indigo leaves cultivated on our partner farms in Southern India.

Purity & Processing

This is Indigo in its most authentic, artisanal form. The extracted pigment is naturally compressed and dried, locking in the potent dye. It is a pure, unadulterated block of natural color.
